A brief insight to boreholes.

The techniques of drilling boreholes have changed over the years but the creating of boreholes is not a new or modern practice. There are records of boreholes dating back to around the 18th century.

A borehole is a long shaft that id drilled into the ground and it can be vertical or horizontal. The holes are quite narrow but they can be very deep. The function of these boreholes is to access underground water, to explore the ground for natural resources or to conduct environmental studies. There are a few methods of creating a bore hole include; vibracoring, percussion drilling and rotary drilling.

There are no exact specifications for the shaft to be considered a borehole. The purpose that borehole will be used for will determine the length or depth of the borehole. The borehole needs to be deep enough to reach the resources that is was intended to reach. Drillers need to consider soil softness and geological formations beneath the surface. Limitations can include the type of drill you can use and also the skill level of the driller.

The main reason for boreholes is to access the underground water that exists in the water table. This is most commonly found in 3rd world countries in rural areas where access to clean running water is limited or non-existent. The first thing that happens is that the bore hole is drilled and this activity requires special drilling skills. The drilling has to be perfect in order to avoid an underground collapse which can damage the pipe or the water can be contaminated. Once drilling is complete, a pump is lowered down into the bore hole. This allows the water to be extracted or pumped out, and, there is often a piece of equipment above ground that speaks to the pump, telling it to send water to the surface.

Boreholes do not have to be drilled on dry earth only. These shafts can also be drilled off-shore, this is quite common actually. The main reason for offshore drilling is to find resources such as oil. These boreholes are drilled from massive ships or rigs that you can attach a drill to.

Geologists also commonly use boreholes to test soil.  A lot of information can be gathered by simply drilling into the ground. The soil quality as well the type of soil can be tested as to determine if the soil is somehow contaminated.
