Submersible Pumps

Submersible pumps are designed to function with the pump and the motor completely submerged in the process media. The motor will be sealed in a way that it prevents any ingress of the media from flowing into the motor casing and causing the motor to fail. Submersible pumps do not use a motor above the ground and the floor space can often be better utilised. The overall cost of the installation may be reduced because there is less labour. The submersible pumps have lower maintenance costs and they create less noise than the pumps which have the motor mounted above ground and this is due to the fact that the pump is submerged and there might be no issues with the pump priming.

There are two primary types of submersible pump installations, these pumps operate down a bored well system and they operate in a sump, wet well or basin. These pumps include a very thin and manoeuvrable submersible motor which is located at the bottom of the pump. Above the motor, there is an inlet screen and suction bell which will direct the fluid into the centrifugal pump stages which consist of impellers and diffuser bowls. The pumps usually have more than one impeller and diffuser and they can be used to pump fluids from very deep wells.

Submersible pumps range from less than 10 gallons per minute and this is a residential version and more gallons per minute for industrial, irrigation and municipal applications. These pumps are normally used clean dirty water or they are often used to deploy on sewage plants. These pumps are applicable in cast iron and ductile iron construction. For less onerous applications that are domestic, lighter duty sump and utility pumps the casing will often be of plastic construction and for the corrosive or abrasive applications the pumps are more exotic and fast.
