What is De-watering?

What is De-watering?

Construction dewatering is a term that is used to describe the action of removing the groundwater or the surface water from a construction site. The dewatering process is done by pumping and evaporating and it is done before excavation for footings or to lower the water table that can cause a problem during the excavations.  Construction dewatering is used on construction sites due to accumulated water in the trenches as well as in the excavations or in places with an inadequate slope or high water table.

In most construction projects the water should be removed to keep the production as a schedule or to provide a safe workplace. In most cases, the builders tend to use water pumps to dewater these areas and if they are not paying attention to the place where the water is discharged, the erosion and other problems may occur and it can affect the progress of the project. It is important to follow the correct management practices which will ensure that when the water is being pumped to the lakes it goes directly to the storm sewer inlets.

Dewatering Precautions

  • Dewatering procedures need to be done properly to avoid eroding the soil on the construction site. Research needs to be done and it is important to choose the best location for discharge even if you might be far from the water bodies or catch basin.
  • When choosing a discharge area from a dewatering process you need to consider the following methods:
  • The water should not be pumped directly into the slopes
  • The dewatering activities should be directed to a wooded buffer.
  • You need to pay attention and discontinue dewatering if the area shows signs of instability or erosion.
